01What is generative engine optimization and how it works
What is generative engine optimization? Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your business named in the answers that Google AI, Gemini and ChatGPT give. It is a long name for a simple idea.
When someone asks an AI a question, you want your business to be the name in the answer. Julian Goldie shows that this happens for the search "best geo expert," where the AI answer at the top names him first.
The AI does not know who the best expert is. It reads the pages that rank for the question and sums up what they say. If five good pages in the top 10 give the same name, the AI repeats that name.
Julian compares it to asking five friends for a restaurant tip. If all five name the same place, you go there. He calls his system the answer engine, and it has three moves:
- Be the source.
- Be everywhere.
- Be first.
02Why GEO matters more than old-style SEO
The way people find a business is changing. Someone asks who the best agency is, and the AI gives one answer or maybe three names. If you are one of those names, you get the call.
If you are not named, the buyer never sees your website. That is the problem GEO solves.
Old SEO was about being one of 10 blue links. You could rank number seven and still get some clicks. An AI answer is a short list, and a short list has no room for number seven.
- Old SEO: 10 blue links, and lower spots still got clicks.
- AI answers: one answer or a few names.
- Result: named businesses get the call, and the rest are not seen.
03The three moves of the answer engine system
Every example in the episode uses one or more of three moves. Together they explain why AI picks one business and skips the rest.
- Be the source: The AI can only repeat what it reads, so your job is to be what it reads. Every page has a real case study, something actually tested, with a real result.
- Be everywhere: Write across many websites, each with a different angle, all pointing to the same answer. That lets you show up two, three or four times on page one for one search.
- Be first: Target trending keywords and publish within 24 hours of the news.
Julian also posts on other platforms. His subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one of Google too. For one search you might see his website, for another his community, and sometimes all of them at once.
04How to get started with generative engine optimization
The episode does not give one fixed checklist. But the steps below follow what Julian says is working for his sites right now.
- Pick a question your buyers ask, such as "best agency" for your service.
- Create a page with a real case study or test you ran yourself.
- Write a listicle where you name yourself as the best for that topic.
- Use your own experience and results so the AI learns you are an expert and why.
- Publish the same answer across multiple platforms, such as your site, a community and a subreddit.
- Watch trending topics and publish within 24 hours.
- Fact check and review all AI-written content before you publish.
Julian also offers a free one-to-one GEO and AEO audit at JulianGoldie.com. It is a free SEO strategy session on getting your brand found, cited and recommended in AI and Google.
05Real GEO examples from the episode
Julian walks through four searches where his pages show up in Google's AI answers.
- Best geo expert: The AI overview names Julian first. His pages appear several times in the sources, and they all point to the same name.
- Best AI SEO community: The AI Profit Boardroom ranks number one and his free community ranks number two. The ranking article was checked after three days and was already ranking.
- Best Harrow agency: Harrow is a way to get links by giving quotes to journalists. The AI lists five suppliers and links to Julian's first. He ranks number one in organic too.
- Best Hermes AI SEO expert: Hermes is a popular AI agent. The AI recommends Julian and its sources are his content on several platforms.
He says this works in other industries as well, like a dentist, plumber or accountant.
06Results and numbers shown in the episode
Julian shares real numbers from real websites. Pages were picked by Google's AI in under 24 hours.
- One site went from zero to 1,300 SEO clicks per day on Google and ranks well inside generative AI.
- On one day that site got over 9,600 impressions inside AI. An impression means your page showed up in a Google AI feature.
- Another site went from 0 to 5,800 impressions a day inside AI search.
- A new page ranked within three days, even though old advice says to wait six months.
He also mentions one site that flopped, so you know what to avoid. The episode does not go into the details of that site.
What works right now, in his words, is content across multiple platforms, listicles that name you as the best, and training the AI with your own experience.
07Tips, limits and mistakes to avoid
The biggest warning is about AI content. On October 1, Google updated its guidance. It says it is critical to fact check and review all AI content before you publish.
This covers the page text, the metadata, structured data and even the text on images. AI models predict words and do not look up facts, so they can get things wrong and hallucinate.
- Use real case studies. The facts come from you, and the AI only helps you write it up.
- Do not rely on one site. If one site drops algorithmically, the others are still there.
- Do not write generic pages. AI tools can write about anything, but they cannot write about a test only you ran.
- Do not wait. The first good page on a new topic with a case study is going to rank.
For example, Julian ranked for Jev architecture and Jev waitlist as soon as Jev AI dropped on a weekend.
08Who GEO is for and how to get help
GEO is for any business that wants to be named when buyers ask AI who is best. That includes AI topics, link building and normal service businesses.
Julian offers two ways to get the full system.
- Done with you: Book a free AEO SEO strategy session. The team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you are closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
- Do it yourself: Join the AI Profit Boardroom. You get the agent OS, the search OS that finds GEO keywords from your own Search Console data, and the SEO skills that wrote the pages in the episode.
Members also get a new manual fact-checking listing, a zip file, a video tutorial, 30-day roadmaps and daily updates. There are four weekly coaching calls and a member map. Julian says over 3,300 members have been helped.
